One of the coolest things that happened to me as a Christian, in the first few years after my mom died, and I was alone most of the time, was when I went out for Christmas, to a mall that was still a busy, working shopping mall, then. I was feeling very sad and lonely, but was out there, looking for Jesus Christ in Christmas, you could say. I was hoping to hear a few Christmas carols, and as a testimony to the people I’d see, I had a pin I’d bought in a Christian bookstore. I had two, “Jesus Is the Reason for the Season”, and this one, which was much better, and said much more, but for some reason, I can’t remember what it said, just that it was a much more meaningful testimony. This was a mall my mom and I had gone to, because we enjoyed perusal little kids talk to their “Santa”. I would never tell my kids that Santa was real, but we both enjoyed perusal the faces of the sweet kids, lined up for the experience. Later, when my mom was sick, I went there alone, and the mall had made it a completely “Lion King” Christmas, with no carols in the background, and with pagan and occult symbols, everywhere. A New Age couple had ridden up in the elevator with me, praising the symbols, and the fact that the mall was so forward thinking, bringing about the changes they all so desired. So there is a lot of sadness in a Christian Christmas, because we must contend with the strong rejection of Jesus’s salvation, from the people who are marching forward into antichrist, in this sad apostasy.
I got my first tattoo when I was 34. I prayed for 4 years about it. I had just gone through 8 major surgeries in 10 years to try to have a baby and was still unable to. I got a cross with a crown of thorns and flowers around my ankle as a reminder that Jesus never left me and how He helped me through that difficult time in my life. I have also used them as a witnessing tool when people ask about them. I will never regret them….

Im a bit late to this one but have some things I thought I could add to the conversation. -For those saying you cant see a reason for a Christian to want/justify getting a tattoo I think there are some things to consider. Tattoos are a personal decision. Maybe you dont have a reason to get one that you feel is valid, but that doesnt mean its that way for everyone. Personally as someone who is 4 years clean of self harm (to put it bluntly I would say this is blatantly idolizing emotions and desires instead of trusting God to bring healing) I used to draw on myself to cope, I still feel the need to have something with me visually to stop the urges. I do wear a cross necklace but sometimes the only thing that helps is to draw in the place that Im tempted to injure, so I would love a tattoo that reminds me of the day Jesus saved me so that my focus is shifted when I look at it. Its not about depending on the tattoo, but about depending on the One whom it reminds me of. – As for conversation starters? Sure wearing clothing that mentions Jesus can spark conversation. But specifically for people who dont believe in Jesus, but do love tattoos, to see a person with a tattoo is exciting and can open a whole new door to taking of personal struggles which can lead to sharing the gospel. Just like people can connect over sports and music, we can also connect over a love of tattoos. -The thing you see in the Bible is God constantly cares so much more about the heart behind the action! I could get a cross tattoo and still be wrong if my heart wasnt actually to honor the Lord.

To be honest with you, I wanted Tats. I once had a piercing, and although I look cool with it, there was a burning/painful feeling in my inner stomach (neither was I sick) Just a stabbing effect. Every time I took the piercing out, the pain would go away. But then I put it back in, the pain will continue. This happen for about a month so I ask this Christian lady at work and wondered what was going on, her reply was “God doesn’t want you to mark yourself” I was like OH!

I am a heavily tattooed Christian, and I am involved in Ministry, and I have learned that sometimes my tattoos can be a stumbling block for other people. I do not have any offencive or vulgar tattoos and all mine have personal meanings,. I do believe that tattoos can be used as an Outreach tool, but on the flip side they can also be a stumbling block for someone who does not fully understand Grace.

Who decides what those are is anyone’s guess. 2. Your reasons for getting one are irrelevant. You are either permitted, or you are not. Legalism is a catch phrase, like calling people racist or homophobic, to shut down conversation into investigating whether or not we have an obligation to perform. And just like “youre racist” and “youre homophobic” or “youre Islamophobic, “youre a legalist” permits many to get away with total nonsense, and coupled with “Im under grace” makes it even worse, as if there arent actually still rules we are expected to follow. It is almost always for emotional, rebellious, vain, self destructive reasons, and is more common amongst those who generally struggle to articulate themselves and who are possessed of depression, anxiety and personality disorders, and thus use tattoos as a medium of expression, most commonly to express some kind of pain. Since a tattoo is permanent, it is the direct equivalent of dwelling on your pain. In clinical settings, once the individuals have managed to get past the pain or trauma, they usually end up regretting the tattoo.

A lot of people have legalistic teachings where they condemn tattoos in all cases when in reality, getting a tattoo is only wrong if it’s evil, overdone, or if done with wrong motives, or if you go against your personal convictions. I hate it when legalistic pharisees try to force personal convictions upon others. What they fail to realize is that not all Christians are meant to be the same.
One thing to keep in mind with the whole “is it worldly, or “you’re body is a temple”. Remember how you judge others is how God will judge you. So if you are judging someone for having tattoos and claiming your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit, but you are simultaneously overweight and constantly eating bad food and not going to the gym, just be careful someone doesn’t flip that on you. Also, if having tattoos is a “worldly” desire, be careful to not be driving around in a fancy car that you wanted or buying an over the top house. These are also worldly desires. The point I’m making here, is we all have worldly desires that we give in to. And we are all sinners. Let’s make sure the log has been removed from our own eye before we remove the spec from our brothers and sisters.
I have a tattoo on my forearm of my daughter’s name, date and time of birth. As a Christian I have no regrets and my conscience is clear. I will say this though, make sure you know what you want and make sure it’ll be worth it. I thought about getting a random tattoo when I was 18, but I waited until I was 33 years old to finally decide.
Whew!! Am reading The Bible a second time (NIV this time around as opposed to NLT) and of course, am getting even more out of it and I just read Leviticus chapter 19 this morning after getting fresh ink earlier this week! And of course, verse 28 stuck out like a SORE THUMB. ZOINKS!!! My previous two tats I had done BEFORE I was saved, but this new one I got AFTER I was saved. What did I get? Well, my wife and I both got crosses tattooed on our right forearms to permanently “mark” us as believers (mine being two spikes lashed together with the blood of our Savior, Jesus Christ, represented on the spikes) and to help with our witnessing efforts. So after my blood ran cold when reading the verse, I immediately sought out Allen Parr’s guidance and watched this article which put my heart at ease as our motivation for doing so was to promote The Kingdom of God. I appreciate the article brother Parr. I went through the phase of wanting to get a tattoo but I never went through with it. Now as a father and grandfather I’m happy that I didn’t get one. I have been guilty of being judgmental before but not condemning of fellow Christians with tattoos. I am referring to the ones who get them after becoming a Christian. I agree that God looks at the heart and not the exterior but just as a personal decision I would not get one. It’s between the individual believer and Christ. God bless you all.
As Christians we are the dwelling place of The Holy Spirit. I do not imagine The Holy Spirit wants His dwelling place adorned with tattoos. We are told to have a modest appearance and to not do anything that would hinder our witness and tattoos would represent a moment of weakness that you gave-in to a desire to decorate your body by fleshly means. You may have thought a long time about getting a tattoo, but you ultimately gave in to the fleshly desire to actually get your tattoo. Like we are to dress modestly, we are to keep our physical body in a modest appearance too. Praise The Lord and Godspeed to you all – Romans 6:23!!
I have been a Christian since I was 5 years old (I am 23 now). When I was 17, I was diagnosed with ALL Leukemia, a cancer of the blood. After treatment and an experimental bone marrow transplant, I got better and was deemed ‘cancer free.’ I got 2 tattoos when I was 19 – on my right arm, on the inside just above my elbow I got the date of my transplant in roman numerals. On my left arm, in the same place, I got a cross tattooed. These are extremely meaningful tattoos which have served as many conversation starters for me. My description of them? The roman numerals are the date God game me a 2nd chance on this earth. My cross tattoo show that God gave me a chance eternally.
I don’t know how I feel about getting tattoos personally, but I am artistic-minded, so I find them beautiful. I know many incredibly spiritual Christians with tattoos who radiate the fruits of the Spirit and sound knowledge. My opinion is we will never truly know based on that small portion of contextual information whether tattoos are inherently evil or judged depending on the motivation behind them. Our thinking is influenced by our denominations, families, atmospheres, life & faith experiences, etc. We each have a unique walk with God and our own convictions. What God made to be a joyful gift to inspire some to praise Him could be a personal conviction for others. Regardless, the Lord is faithful to work everything out for the good of those who love Him. Neither that nor salvation are excuses to commit what one knows is a sin, but because there is no certainty here, I believe it is up to the individual and what they believe the Holy Spirit is speaking to them on the matter. As far as the assumption that people only get tattoos for attention, I have to passionately disagree. Tattoos are art. They are a thing of beauty and some people simply enjoy looking at and wearing them. Others get tattoos for sentimental reasons. There are a number of people who seek attention or worship false idols by way of tattoos, but God alone has the authority to execute judgement. Bless up ✌🏻
I became fascinated with tattoos when I was a teen and got a few in the Navy (it was the thing to do). Initially I wanted a cobra or dragon, but something kept me from getting either. Thank God! When I got out the military, I wanted to get more, but saw for myself in the Bible that we shouldn’t and I didn’t. The ones I have now are discreet and I still like them, but I won’t be getting more.
Heyy!!👋 If people only knew the chemical composition of tattoo inks, dyes, pigments and all the side effects or more importantly the long-term effects tattoo inks can have on your immune system, pathology,…(the list of health issues related to it is endless), they will see that a tattoo is not a good idea. Same for anything, be careful of what you are exposing yourself to. 1Corinthians 10:23 and 1Corinthians 6:19. If you decide to get one anyway, avoid iron-based inks. Bad for MRI.
I like this lesson, I’ve seen here in the comments many religious mindset people still condemning tattoos while still ignoring the other THO SHALL NOTS in the same passage 🤦🏽♂️. I started getting tattoos in highschool…before you judge, let me elaborate. I got my first concussion in the fall of my senior year. It ROCKED my life, like..thank the Lord I was able to graduate. But something really scary (to me) started happening. I started forgetting things. I then got another TBI (traumatic brain injury) the following February, followed by a 3rd that same August. I got my tattoos because I was scared I was going to forget all the amazing things God’s done in my life. At some point I will admit, I just continued getting more ink because I thought it looked cool, and I still think they look cool! I’ve kept them in immaculate condition because they are an investment. I’m now 24, and the most recent TBI I received was last year on Christmas Eve….only….that was my 8th concussion since that first one back in highschool. My concussions just piled on top of eachother since my brain never really had a chance to fully heal before I got another. I’m not at all condoning getting a sleeve “just because”. They’re expensive, they require a decent amount of care to continue looking *new*, and they sometimes give me away for being the kinda guy you wouldn’t want your daughter dating. BUT God’s been so good to me & being able to remember that “Only Jesus will Satisfy” my longing heart is such an encouragement! I have had SO many opportunities to witness to people as a result of them seeing my ink. They’re stories of God’s faithfulness, mercy, and sovereignty, whether that message is for me, or for the world!
Right when I saw the title I was like “well, too late for that! Not much I can do about it!” I believe THE CONDITION OF YOUR HEART is what’s MOST IMPORTANT. One can be all tatted up and have a beautiful, loving and giving heart and the other could have no tattoos but be arrogant, not considerate of others and think themselves better than other Christians simply because their outer appearance is “pure”. I am a Christian and I am saved – with 5 tattoos. Most of them are hidden but I feel honestly I can do what I want as long as I don’t sin. I’m not perfect, so I’m not saying I don’t, but in my daily walk I can say I strive to make sure my ways a pleasing to God. When I do catch myself doing things, or think back on things that I’ve done – or should’ve done, I repent. My heart is right whether people think my tattoos are wrong or not. My relationship with my Father is solid, I chose Him because He chose me first. 😎
I have a key with the worst ‘I Am Worth It’ on it. This is my contract with myself. Four tiny words that until 7 years ago I was not even able to speak. Now I live it out daily. Those four words changed my life. When I was able to see me through God’s eyes and love myself the way He loves me those words were not so tiny anymore! My tattoo is where it cannot be seen unless I want it to be seen. It was for me. It reminds me, when I forget, just how precious and worthy I truly am, simply because He created me. It is a part of my testimony. It can be a fantastic segue into the ministry I serve with. And sometimes I just need to be reminded of that “key” to my better life —- I Am Worth It!!!!! Because I am.
The odd thing is that I got saved when I was 18, I read about tattoos in the Bible, and read Leviticus 19:28 “Ye shall not make any cuttings in your flesh for the dead, nor print any marks upon you: I am the LORD.” I immediately went out and got a tattoo of a dove with 13 flames, representing the Holy Spirit, Christ, and His 12 followers. And today I have several more on my body all representing my faith in Christ, and who my family is in Him. When I first got a tattoo I thought, if I am unable to speak, my skin will speak for whom I belong to, if I am acting unchristian, it will makes me think of who I am in the moment and who I want to be in Christ, and when someone asks what they mean, (which has happened multiple times) it opens the door to conversation about my faith in a way I can relate to that person and tell them about it without being forceful. Every single one has been thought out, designed, and put through prayer before being put on my temple. My thought was and still is that these marks aren’t for the the dead, they represent Christ who is very much alive.
When I tell you I was relieved while perusal this. The reason I want a tattoo is because I love art and I like the way it looks in general, although it would probably be better not to get a tattoo I really like the look of them, not even for attention! This article took a few scriptures out of context. When the Bible talks about cutting the hair/beard in Leviticus, it is talking about a Pagan Practice known as a Tonsure. It has nothing to do with actually getting a haircut. Eating meats was explained by Jesus and Paul The Apostle in the New Testament and mixing two garments in Leviticus is talking when God was telling his people NOT to wear the clothing of Priest for it would be confusing to identify who was who. Tattoos are a Pagan practice that is apart of witchcraft through bloodletting and Shamanism. God told his people “Nor Print ANY MARK upon you” for a reason. Tattooing the body invites demons and forms covenants. As Christians we should repent and ask the Holy Spirit to break any covenants made in the name of Jesus.

My inquiry falls upon the Spirit of The Law. Matthew 5:17 “I have not come to abolish them (The Law & Prophets) but to fulfill them.” 2 Corinthians 3:6 “He has made us competent as ministers of a new covenant—not of the letter but of the Spirit; for the letter kills, but the Spirit gives life.” We take from The Word that our goal is to be like Jesus as we strive day to day. And while we will always be sinners here on earth should we not try as mightily as we can to follow Jesus’ example? He rejected the pleasures of the flesh. Shouldn’t we also try? What justifiable reason is there to mark ones body except for selfish motives in some way, shape, or form? I’m not casting judgement because that’s not my role as a fellow Christian, but I merely am curious of the answers I could get to my questions.
I believe this for many years i asked myself and God about tattoos. I even asked some preachers and they quoted that very verse about cutting yourself. Something never fit right. Allen you are wrong with this one. The Bible reads, do not mark your skin. What part of that do you not understand. When we get Tattoos, we mark our skin permanently. This is not a Hebrew practice and niether is it a Christian practice. This comes from the practice of paganism. God forbids Christians to take part in pagan religions practices. He even says,” Do not honour me in the same way the pagans worship their God’s. You are confusing Christians with Hebrew traditional laws. Noticed I said “traditional”. Some of these traditional laws are tricky to keep. But a tattoo is not really hard to figure out wether it is right or wrong.

Also had a beautiful dream one night Sitting in a tree looking out at a field, golden sunset skyline in sight, a person was sitting next to me on the branch, I could feel doubt in my heart, than immediate relief, I looked down at my arms and all the ink started to peel off like ash, and flew into the breeze, underneath was fresh new skin … I woke up that morning, told my wife, we had a good cry. All my tattoos are reminders of times of when god has helped me move forward in life. I’ve actually been able to use my tattoos as an introduction to a conversation about Jesus and how he can do all things. Also as someone that has bouts of anxiety they help remind me to stay focused on Jesus when the world try’s to distract me
First. The new testament commandment of loving God with all of your heart, mind and soul. In line with that you should want to follow the commandments of God. Are you justified and dont have to, sure. But you should desire to not sin. That is like saying that lying is still okay after being saved. Its not at all right. So you should try to avoid it because God wouldnt like that, even thought his grace and mercy will cover it, doesnt mean you use God for personal gain
Did God create anyone with tattoos in their skin? No. Did God create anyone with piercings in their skin? No. He created us in His image, when we put marks or tattoos on it we are marring God’s creation. There are plenty of different ways to start a conversation, and you don’t have to have a tattoo to start a conversation. And by the way, the King James Version is the closest thing we have to the original. All other so called bibles are missing thousands of words. Example: NIV is missing over 60,000 words compared to the KJV. Would you buy a 10lb bag of groceries that really only had 2 lbs? Nope. Why have a knife if you could have a sword ?
My girl and I have one on the back of our necks from years ago,before actually going to church and getting saved.The tattoo was kinda meant to solidify the relationship and the commitment to each other (we’re still together 14 years👍🏾).I personally always wanted to have my left arm signify my past influences (i’m a comic book artist) and my right arm my own creator owned comicbooks..People were always looking at me funny even with my reasoning behind it so I never got them,put honestly the thought still lingers..Btw i “sneakily” incorporate lessons in my stories sorta aspiring to what Jesus did with stories he told folks.And that would obviously also be incorporated in the tattoo designs..

I am a Christian and I love tattoos. I get tattoos because I enjoy getting tattoos not necessarily because I’m trying to portray that I’m cool or a have a particular reason behind it. I knew what I wanted going in which was to finish my arm sleeves and my chest and that’s it. I feel the ADDICTION of tattoos (like the addiction of anything) is what makes something sinful. Everything in tasteful moderation.
I have a full sleeve and on a second sleeve. My first sleeve is religous so it has a bible verse and mother Mary, roses, the dove of peace etc.. my other sleeve is of animals because I love animals. None of my tattoos are against God or mock God so to me it’s not wrong. I am a Christian and I dont get sculls or snakes or anything like that. I will continue to have tattoos because I have no problem with them or think they’re wrong
I have a single tat on the inside of my right forearm. It is simply the word “Faith,” with a small letter ‘f’ and the rest of the letters all done so it looks like a cross. It has personal significance to me. And I see it as beautifying my “temple,” not destroying it. Jesus said it is what comes out of us that defiles us, the evil in our hearts. I don’t regret my tat and my conscience is clear before God. I never expected to have a tat, actually so it’s not like I was lusting after, or pining after or nurturing some “fleshly desire,” for years as some have described it here. As with many things, under the New Covenant, I believe it’s a matter of conscience between you and the Holy Spirit.
Sorry l don’t agree with you. Why have scriptures or l love Jesus tattooed on my arm as a conversation starter? You could wear a T-shirt that conveys this. A bracelet, necklace, bag, even decorate your car. Absolutely no reason to tattoo ones body as a conversation starter. Tattooing is a trend. We should be trend setters for things of God and not followers of fashion. We are in the world and not of this world.

I have been saved for a few years now, and I am heavily tatted up with plans to get more. I have a full sleeve that consists of flowers and my kids names, I have a flower on my leg, and on my right arm I have a cross tattoo that says Jesus is Lord. I also want to get a Trinity symbol and a Bible verse tatted under that. I definitely think my tattoos can help in ministry.
Tattoos express who you are. I have a small one on my ankle, I always forget it sometimes. The tattoo is “RJ” and “j” is a fishhook. I have has many family remembers who passed with those initials. My friend in church got a map on her shoulder. She said she is shy to tell people about God, so when people ask about her tattoo she can tell them that these are the places Ive been to spread the word.

How do you feel about the verse in 1 Corinthians 3:16-17 “Know ye not that ye are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwelleth in you? If any man defile the temple of God, him shall God destroy; for the temple of God is holy, which temple ye are.” We see Paul speaking to the church (believers) in Corinth regarding the truth of our bodies. As Holy Ghost filled believers, we are the temple of God. Paul is connecting the truth of being a temple with the warning of defilement. He says “if any man shall defile the temple (not a building but rather our own bodies), him shall God destroy.” The word DEFILE in Greek is Spiloo, along with three other variant words which basically describe the same thing. A marring, staining, or blemish. The “first mentioned principle” of biblical hermeneutics reveals to us the method of interpretation for understanding. We do see cutting, marring, various forms of tattoos being used in rituals, customs of the enemies of God’s people, and much more which cannot be simply written in a brief comment. Believers who take something the enemy started and currently uses, while spinning it to try and become artsy or a way of modern expression is irresponsible and very irreverent as a Christian. We belong to Jesus Christ, plain and simple. We are called to Holiness and righteousness which occurs inwardly but also manifests outwardly. While tattoos have been used for many purposes including contracts with demonic spirits, gang affiliation, identification within circles, artistic expressions, and so much more; believers much stand separate from feeling the need to defile our temple.
As a Christian, I say NO to tattoos. The Lord Jesus taught many lessons and parables in the New Testament on how we are to use money, invest money, and above all, USE IT WISELY. So seriously, I don’t believe for one second that God would want us to frivolously waste the money that were are responsible for in spending it on expensive tattoos.
These are some amazing points. Another thing to consider is if tattoo will effect your testimony. My youth Pastor has a ton on his arms that he got before he got saved, and the main thing he directs people towards concerning them is if that person would think he was a Christian based on his appearance. The answer is no, mainly because of their size and prominence. Something to consider. (I’m not anti tattoo, in fact I think some are really cool and meaningful, but this does require some thought and discernment)
I was an introvert and a bit shy when it came to start a conversation about my faith. I had bought a motorcycle and was riding and I had an idea to get a tattoo as a conversation starter. It didn’t take long and i got a tattoo of a cross on my right bicep of a cross of thorns, actual thorns, not tribal or such. When asked about it, I would answer that my savior had a crown of 3 – 4″ thorns shoved onto his head when he died for me. I then point out that no matter how hard our life is, it is nothing as bad as those thorns and pain he suffered for me. So my thorns are smaller to represent that as a Christian, we would suffer for our faith, but nothing like he did. I moved on to get the Christian fish put on my left bicep in the same style. That’s also a good conversation starter and to talk about how early Christians used such symbols just to meet and talk about Jesus without being caught and put to death. I’m not an introvert anymore, so that pushed me in the right direction, even though my Pentecostal father in law hates it. HAHA. I do have on my chest towards the left side a little bit, the “not of this world” symbol as a reminder, and of course, conversation starter to answer why I put up with what I do in Jesus’s name. I was delivered from alocholism and God cleaned my life out as a raging war vet, and a church elder got high and mighty about my tattoos, instead of being happy for what God was doing in my life….seemed like he was acting like the brother of the prodigal sons with his attitude, seemed like the religious pharisees who hung Jesus on the cross, and it was such a condemnation that I felt like rolling out, but I kept my cool, stayed firm, used respect and said that God has been healing me….I also felt like “this is why new belivers or new visitors leave churches,” because self-righteous church go’ers condemn, and forget to remove the plank out of their own eye and show love and counsel with love……I have since took a break from getting faith-based tattoos but am not 100% convinced. I have shared my faith hundreds of times because people see my faith Nd ask questions, they are all faith based tattoos or moto for my military service (nothing evil at all) I was getting Faith tattoos before/after I got saved. We are all a work in progress, we are all being cleansed by the Holy Spirit, and I am praying for clarity. I have taken a break do its not an idol, not vanity, and my main reason getting them were reminders to myself. Please pray for my clarity as I dont want to sin against my Jesus. He saved my life and has been giving me 100s of opportunities to share about my testimony to many people everywhere I go.
That is spot on. It comes down to those points, with emphasis on the condition of your heart behind getting a tattoo. I want to just correct 1 thing, the lifeblood. Life is in the blood, not in the meat. When an animal is slaughtered, it is drained of it’s blood, that first cut you make will have blood pouring out until the vessel is empty (It used to be that it was spilled on the ground, now people eat it, in 1 form or another, eg. black pudding) So when you eat rare/raw meat, there is no blood in it. What lays on your plate is saturated water and myoglobin. Myoglobin is a protein in muscle.
I’m so glad this article pointed out the other points in Leviticus that many over look, simply cos they frown upon tattoos, yes I have tattoos, I have 1s that I’m currently getting rid of as I got them in my backslidden days, but a year ago I got the face of a lion on my right hand to represent Jesus and on my right forearm where I already had a cross, I got that freshened up and added YHWH to it, and once this current lockdown has finished I’m booked in for another tattoo to go on my neck saying Jesus Christ “It is Finished”, and for me these are another way to witness to people, so for all you Christian tattoo haters, just remember what other verses were brought up, and the meaning behind things 👍🏻
When you understand that humans are our own God’s and the existence of God is refuted, you know what true freedom is. To any Christian reading that and already fuming at my comment, I only have this to say. Never stop asking questions. The only thing stronger than the fear you have of Hell is curiosity.
I am a Christian and I have 3 tattoos that I got before my TBI which I had an OBE. I have a Celtic cross on my right arm, I have a tribal cross on my left arm, and I have a set of angel wings on my back. I do not believe that I am going to hell or that it is a sin because they are all Christian like. Thank you 😉
I got saved at 17. When I turned 18, as a gift I got a tattoo of a beautiful blue cross between my shoulder blades. It was slightly painful. But I don’t regret it. I love Jesus and having that cross on my back makes me appreciate the Lord and Savior. I always thought of it like this. We decorate churches/temples with crosses and images. And there wasn’t a clear scripture, so I didn’t worry about it. My heart is the Lords.
Do a tattoo is a way to express yourself, is a kind of art, and there is nothing related with sin. The only argument against this is the scripture that he described and it was wrongly interpreted (out of context). If you take care, like the pastor explained very well in this article, to not do by the wrong reasons, do not promote the wrong ideas, to promote lust etc, it is ok. We all have different opinions about what is good or bad, ugly or pretty, based on our background, age, culture, country, family, experiences etc. But we need to focus on the bible. It is our final manual! Just because something is not cool in my opinion, is not automatically a sin. Remember that as a christian the problem is to judge others, what we are not allowed to. This is a sin for sure! We, as christians, are commanded to love each other. In other times and cultures many of the actual regular behaviors used to be prohibid. Pants for women, make up, short hair, colorful clothes, and I could go for weeks with things that we are perfectly allowed to wear and use today and was condemned in the past. So, don’t start to create a new bible. Just observe and try to obey what the bible says. This is our task. Do not judge, but love your neighbor! PS. And love the tattoo artists too. They are talented people who strive to develop an art that is hard to do and normally not well paid. They are not monsters. They are human beings, professionals, doing what they love to do. We are the ones who are supposed to see everybody as our sons and daughters, love them, not point the finger and condemned them.
1 Cor 3:16 ” our body is a temple of the Holy Spirit …. 2 Cor 3:16, 17 – We are the Temple of the Living God …. Come out from among them and be ye separate says the Lord of Hosts . If you have one … move on as God looks at the heart as man looks at the outward. But think we need to be LOVING as we walk and talk as we are just passing through. Wouldn’t get a Tat personally and not going to judge one that does …. but … Most Christians that get one are young in their faith or had previous tat before Christ. First of all I would like to say I really enjoy your articles I watch all of them but in this instance I must disagree because the word says be ye separated from the world the world does get tattoos the world does wear heavy makeup the world doesn’t follow the laws of the land of Jesus Christ so with this being said I ask that God just works with your heart and you continue to do more studying on certain topics besides this you’re a great brother in the Lord thank you for all what you do for the community but be careful🙏😊

I had to watch this twice, I dont have any tats and been told to get one,been asked why I dont have and been picked on cuz i dont have any, I never thought getting a tattoo im not scared of needles I guess its cuz my parents always told me its pegan and Pegs where against God therefore it would be sinful right ? I have a lot of tattoos that I got before I came to Christ. I’ve got some empty space and I would love to fill it up with Scripture/Bible Verses/Bible imagery. I would love for it to be a talking piece for people to ask me about it etc. The only “Christian symbolism” tattoo I have is a large cross with flowers surrounding it that I got before I even came to Christ, my family was Christian and I honestly got it for them because I didn’t know God then, and even that piece alone garners questions from people. I have felt that in general people put up fewer walls around me because of my appearance. I want to use that for the Lord. I’m already heavily inked, what’s a few more but this time ink with a purpose, everything I do should glorify God.
After reading the question, the holy spirit helped me to feel HIS pains & wounds from the day when HE was crucified for my sins…also this verse came in front of me. Blessings Isaiah 53:5 New International Version 5 But he was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was on him, and by his wounds we are healed.
All things are lawful but not expedient. What the Lord has shown me is that anything done in excess is not good. There are a lot of people who feel they need to cover just about every inch of their bodies in tatts. Seeing such things is painful to me for there is a strong leaning to a lack of self love. At least it is not the kind of self love God wants for us. One of your points was good. If someone were to cover themselves in ink and woke up one day tired of it all, it would not be very easy to get rid of it all.
I’m covered in tattoos… but, since I begun working on growing in my spiritual relationship with God, I’ve found my desire to get more has disappeared completely. This is just what I believe the Holy Spirit has put on my heart: Tattoos are not for God. Not for His honor or His glory. They are things driven by our own desires that we try to manipulate excuses for that justify our having them. Do they serve God? Do they do anything to enhance His kingdom? Or are they at the root, vanity? Simply something that we wanted but questioned whether we were disobeying God by doing so… my resolution, if you have to ask yourself if it’s wrong, then it probably is.
This is great… I like this one. So, on a personal note, I think that getting a tattoo is a generally bad idea. To me it’s like putting on a suit that you can never, ever take off or change. Biblically speaking, I do not believe there is a such thing as “New Testament Law”. Paul said that all things are permissible, but not all things are expedient (someone please let me know how newer translations translate expedient). It’s like the question of tithing – and, as I have not yet watched your article on the subject of tithing, please forgive me if I’m saying something different than what you believe. Got said, “I will write my law in their hearts” – I believe this to have been a reference to the age of grace. The real question, in my opinion, is not, “Does God still mandate the tithe?” The real question we should ask ourselves is, “Is it God’s will for me to tithe?” The same could be said for getting a tattoo. Does God want you to have it? Not, Is God permitting me to get it. If you are a born again believer you should be able to ask that question. Not that I don’t think it’s important to be Biblically grounded… it is. It absolutely is. But Jesus said, “My sheep know my voice.” If you are a born again believer in Jesus, you have his law in your heart, and you should be able to draw on that to find your answer.
I have been wanting a Christian tattoo for awhile and Gods called me into ministry when I was fifteen. I been given Leviticus 19:28 as a scripture saying tattoos are a sin. But that’s the old covident law before Christ came. Because the New Testament I haven’t found scripture saying you couldn’t have markings.
I am really, really struggling with this. I have had an on again off again relationship with the Lord. I have let myself get distracted with what this world has to offer. And when I was in one such stage, I started a sleeve. I have since given my life back to the Lord, and have struggled to continue going in for my tats. I have changed the theme of my tattoos to portray my faith, I’ve had the wonderful opportunity to witness to my artist (who I believe The Lord is dealing with), and I anticipate that it’ll be a conversation starter for those who ask about them and see their very Christian message portrayed. However: I do NOT want to be a stumbling block to those around me in the faith. I cover them when serving and getting together in certain settings (Bible studies, conservative gatherings, on the worship team at my church).
I wanna share my story regarding this topic. I am COVERED in tattoos, from head to toe 😭 I started getting them when I was 17 – way before I came to know Jesus & surrender my life to Him. I found my identity in my tattoos and I got them with the wrong motives/intentions when I was living IN sin. I became addicted to tattoos & the pain became a way for me to cope with the pain I was feeling on the inside. I was trying to fill the empty void with everything in the world, not realizing my need for a Lord & Savior!! I turned to sex, alcohol, drugs, and TATTOOS to try to fill that void. But no matter how many men I slept with, how many drugs I did, how many tattoos I got – it was never enough. It always left me feeling empty. It was all just temporary happiness/satisfaction. I needed JESUS. Only He could fill the void in my heart ❤️ When I got saved last year, I chose to become celibate and sober. I didn’t even think about my tattoos until I felt the Holy Spirit convict me! That’s when I repented for my tattoos and I promised God I was DONE with tattoos. God has forgiven me and set me free! I found my identity in Him alone. I am a new creation in Christ. God has forgiven me for my sins, including my tattoos. I know these tattoos may be viewed as permanent on my body, in this world, but I know I will no longer have them on my glorified body, in my Heavenly home 🕊🙌🏼. I’ve been walking with the Lord for awhile now and I have come to view my tattoos as a part of my testimony.
My friend has been a working in China for years. In this culture those people who have tatoos are looked down upon as “hoodlums” (her word).. You could lose your witness with a tatoo. We lived in Italy and an American with a sleeve tatoo came and led worship. Many people were distracted by it in the congregation. The last thing is that many people who get one tatoo cannot stop at one.
At age 41 I got three butterflies on my arm. Black ink. In 1999 when my passed away with colon cancer. About year in 2000 summer at laundry mat I was sitting on bench thinking n missing her. Most beautiful big monarch butterfly landed on my left elbow. I knew she is my butterfly angel. In may 2020 my brother passed away beautiful blue butterfly was at outside I knew
I was on a mission trip while in college. The tropical location was covered in geckos that we had to chase out of everywhere! I saw dozens of families come to Jesus on that trip and I will always remember it… I now have a tattoo of a gecko on my shoulder. And yes, I tell the story when ever someone asks. 🙂
Bro I’m sorry I may sound as I don’t agree with you but I do support what you are doing and I have no choice but to share my thoughts and questions only on comments unless you would like to share an email so we could discuss over there. Not fully disagreeing to what u are saying but my concern about tattoos is, do we know for sure if God is pleased with us having a tattoo. The word of God says in Romans 12:10 Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is his good, pleasing and perfect will. As we know tattoos are mostly encouraged by cults and mostly by the satanic movements even in the present day. There is surely a reason why it is encouraged in such cults and we will know if we study more about these satanic cults in the present day. Even though the context of the Bible verse in Leviticus may sound as if it was for people only at that time, but if the same practices are being followed differently in the present day then we should be concerned about getting a tattoo. We may get a bible verse as a tattoo but still as far as I know there is some spiritual and demonic thing when you cut or damage ur skin when getting a tattoo done. This is a reason why most satanic cults today encourage getting tattoos. We will need to do more research on that. Second argument people talk with regards to tattoos is that our body is the temple of God and do we also follow the same things what the world do ?
You have to look at many other scriptures besides Lev. Like acknowledge the Lord in all your ways, do all things to the glory of God, submit to one another. And one of my favorites Jesus said, “I only do the things that I see my Father doing,” So you have to LOOK at many scriptures! Oh and the scripture that says, “Your body is the temple of the Holy Spirits,” I do like your article Brother.
Hey man, I have a tattoo with two roses and my moms name below it on my front forearm.. I’m terrified what God will think. If my Mom dies… (which she will eventually) then it’s a tattoo dedicated to someone dead… does this mean im fucked? I also have one on my shoulder of a Lion.. is my soul eternally ruined? I have only lived for God and I just can’t believe this is real.. there’s so many people with them including yourself.. im terrified.. what can I do? I love my Mom more then anything in this world.. id die for her.. she did everything for me my whole life.. how could God care this much? And the Lion is to represent God and to represent being confident in myself.. to be strong.. in this chaotic life.. what does this all mean for me? I’m scared.. because if Leviticus @ is real… then what do I do? I’d do anything to be right for God. I just wanna get into heaven man.. life is already so short.. Can you help me?

I believe that’s it’s similar to “smoking” the Bible doesn’t mention that smoking is a sin but there are many Bible verse that support that God doesn’t want to smoke. ” what ever you do, do it for the glory of God” “Our bodies are temple of our Creator” Why would we want to mutilate it? We need to have the Word of God tattooed in our heart’s and that should be sufficient.
