Robert De Niro, a renowned actor, has a unique tattoo on his right shoulder, which is rarely visible. He has also had temporary tattoos, most famously in his role as Max Cady in 1991’s “Cape Fear”. However, the panther tattoo is his only authentic one.
De Niro’s appearance in the film made fans wonder if any of the tattoos seen were actually real. In the movie, De Niro portrays Max Cady, a felon trying to get his revenge. His portrayal in Martin Scorsese’s Cape Fear remake proved to be a groundbreaking role for tattoos in cinema. He was covered in tattoos for the film but they were all fake except for one.
At the Tribeca film festival, De Niro discussed various topics, including his tattoos, including a crucifix, scales of truth and justice, biblical quotations, and a cross tattoo on his right shoulder. These temporary tattoos were created using makeup and special effects for the film. Paul Jacobs from Temptu Europa, a man in Edinburgh who specializes in temporary tattoos for the film and television business, confirmed that De Niro got actively involved in the process.
De Niro’s black panther tattoo is a testament to his political activism and connection to the Black Panther movement. It serves as a reminder of the ongoing fight for racial justice and equality, and the importance of continuing to fight for these causes. The most notable tattoo is the “Love” and “Hate” knuckle tattoo on his right hand, symbolizing his twisted duality of emotions.
In the movie “Cape Fear”, De Niro has a tattoo on his right forearm above his wrist, which is the only real black panther tattoo. It had to work around the one single tattoo De Niro already had, a blank panther on his upper arm.

One of the greatest suspense movies of all time- when this came out, I was in high school…I’m pretty sure I went to the theater at least three different times to watch this version of the movie- loved it so much I took a female friend on a date to see it, and a group of us went, and my dad wanted to go see it, so I went with him. Between this movie, Silence of the Lambs, The Fugitive- lot of great movies came out in those days.
When I watched this as a youngster, it never occured to me the scope of the physical transformation that Robert De Niro made for this film. This was after Godfather II (very skinny) and Raging Bull (lean then obese). This guy was doing physique transformations for film roles before Christian Bale and Jake Gyllenhaal started school.
Robert De Niro showcased with this performance just how diverse of an actor he is. I remember perusal this and waiting for his strong New York accent to accidentally seep through and it NEVER did. His acting in this film was stellar and I’m not surprised because anytime he’s coupled with Scorsese everything is on another level. Max Cady is a deeply broken and disturbed character and De Niro nailed it. The scene where he drowns at the end, the look on his face as it happening… That’s an actor, baby. My, goodness.
The original is a vastly better and more frightening film. De Niro looks like that tiny guy who hit the gym, and he’s always shot from below to make him appear bigger (which still doesn’t work). In the original, Robert Mitchum is huge and genuinely threatening and creepy, even to a big guy like Gregory Peck. Watch it
0:41 MCU/DC references everywhere: -Vengeance is mine (Batman: “I’m vengeance”) -The time is at hand (Doctor Strange) -The Lord is the Avenger -Clown (Joker) face -Justice (League) written under the scales -Flash tattoos or maybe Thor’s thunders -Time the Avenger (Loki series maybe) If you overthink there is a woman called Loretta Dooley in MCU
As gnarly as this sounds, the coolest movie tattoos belong to dear old Buffalo Bill from Silence of the Lambs… call me a weirdo but on an actual hard-hitter assassin type person those tattoos would look so hardcore. That and the tribal sleeve in from dawn till dusk, he was just such a cool character and at the end he shows the tatt. Thats smooth. Also, his back tatt is the best.
i’ve always thought De Niro is too cool and badass to be sporting so many tattoos here. I don’t know, correct me if u think otherwise, his characters, face, gaze and intensity of his eyes, are enough without any need for quirky hairstyles and tattoos. I mean look at Taxi Driver, normal hair, no tats, and yet all he needs to convey is right there. This whole film in general portrays him in a caricaturistic way.
Back when he could act and kept to acting and didn’t give us a political lecture every time he was in front of the camera, He needs to learn respect the discusting way he spoke about the president and the threats he kept making an him. It is funny how he has to read of a promter just to say a sentence. But can remember a 10 minute political lecture.
