“My name is Maximus Decimus Meridius. Commander of the armies of the North, General of the Felix Legions, loyal servant to the true Emperor Marcus Aurelius, father to a murdered son, husband to a murdered wife. And I will have my vengeance in this life or the next.” Please leave your voice message after the tone.
I am always amazed by Crowe’s delivery of those lines. Starting determined as befitting the rank of a general, the tremor in his voice midway through the speech when he painfully remembers and mentions his dead family, and finally ending it again (kinda) emotionally composed but grimly determined about having his vengeance. Those lines coming from a veteran – although fallen low – still commands respect for he is very dangerous to Commodus: A very clear target in mind, nothing left to lose, with extensive experience on the battlefield and the fame included with his name. Phoenix’s reaction is spot on and exactly represents my feelings after that speech. He realizes the immediate danger coming from Maximus prowess and charisma.
An underrated element in this scene is the inner world of Maximus. Note the decision to pick up the would-be murder weapon is made when the son is fully out of sight and absent from the scene. You can see the conflict Maximius feels upon witnessing a father’s love… even that from a sworn nemesis and enemy. His principles and values provoke a painstakingly loud dilemma in his heart and mind. I feel this is why he diverts his gaze down to the ground… because the hug and affection takes command of his rage. The son unknowingly becomes a shield and one of the only possible defenses that Maximus could not battle through works. It’s so much for him to bear that his entire demeanor shifts. We are then shown what are presumed to be empty hands once Maximus turns his back and walks away. It stands to reason that the turn and walk helps Maximus hide his original plan by either disposing of or concealing the weapon. Instead, he attacks with an even more powerful weapon in a means that is conducive to alignment with his values and beliefs. He fully realizes in that moment (during the staredown especially) that this attack will protect the son’s life, which matters more to him than his vengeance (in this life or the next). Note the importance of this exchange in the young boy’s sudden awareness of his father’s evil ways too. Remember the counsel he was given: “I was not the best because I killed quickly. I was the best because the crowd loved me. Win the crowd and you will win your freedom.
Just watch the film again last night, I honestly believe I didn’t see the movie since I saw it in the cinema when I was 9 years old. And seeing the movie with my grown up eyes, paying more attention to details. In the scene, commodus can’t even silence the crowd from after doing the hush sign with his finger on the mouth, he doesn’t have any authority, valor, nothing, Maximus, the slave, has everything, the crowd and the comrades that immediately surround him when the prétoriens were ready to execute the order of killing them all. This give me the chills, and the movie made me cry, at 33 years old when I didn’t when I was 9, and I have absolutely zero shame, things film is a pure gem.
Born in New Zealand in ’64, A hot-headed actor named Russell Crowe. He loves to act but he loves one thing more, Fightin’ Around the World! He fights his directors and he fights his fans, It’s a problem no one understands. (If there’s two things he loves, it’s fighting and) Fightin’ Around the World! Making movies Making music And Fightin’ Around the World~~ (Russell Crowe!)
It’s the fact that he picks up the arrowhead as he sees Commodus coming down to meet him. He was ready to finish his job in that moment whether it got him killed or not, and likely would have done if it wasn’t for the kid being there with him. It’s the fact that someone’s son is the only thing that made him hesitate.
“My name is Maximus Decimus Meridius, commander of the Armies of the North, General of the Felix Legions and loyal servant to the TRUE emperor, Marcus Aurelius. Father to a murdered son, husband to a murdered wife. And I will have my vengeance, in this life or the next.” Hardest line in movie history EVER.
If you were to have 3 sons and have named them Maximus, Decimus, and Meridius, respectively… imagine calling them out of bed every morning to get ready for school and eat breakfast. “Hey Maximus! Decimus! Meridius! Hurry up or you’ll all miss the bus!” And they all refuse to eat their oatmeal for fear that it’s been poisoned. Then the family dog, (Haagen/Haaken?) wanders in, all muddy and with a dead squirrel in its mouth, puts it down, and proceeds to eat all the oatmeal. XD
Nothing says “don’t take this ass whipping personally” quite like this. His reaction to that line and the revealing of Maximus’ was true”wtf” and “how tf are you alive” He was scared shitless cause he knew as of that moment the jig was up. Excellent acting, can’t believe he got robbed for that role. Damn shame.
So, based on the second movie, Maximus is a cheater? He has a wife and a son while having fun with the emperor’s daughter, also having a son with her. The new emperor (Joaquon Phoenix) kills his wife and son. And then maximus uses them in the arena to get the support from the other gladiators… “Husband to a murdered wife, father to a murdered son”…man, dont use your wife as a reason for vengeance, you did not respect her during your marriage by having another women, so just be honest that it is only about you (but then it would not be honorable) And the second movie says, the words he lived by were “strength and honor”…where was in honor when cheated on his wife. The second movie ruined the character for me and his speech. The words mean nothing when he did not respect his wife enough to stay true to her
1:04 I’ve translated it in Latin and here is how it would have been: “Ego sum Maximus Decimus Meridius, dux septentrionalis exerciti, imperator Felix legionum, fidelis minister unici, veri Caesaris, Marcus Aurelius. Pater filii occisi, maritus uxoris occisi. Et meam vindictam habebo, in hac vita aut in altera!” 🔥💪🔥💪🔥💪🔥💪🔥💪🔥
One of them films that Hollywood wished they had kept him alive to do another one. I am happy that it ended like it did so no one could ruin this epic film with a crap Sequel, other Films come to mind I am also happy they never made another. Pulp Fiction, Goodfellas and Leon, some fantastic Films are truly great just by themselves don’t always need more after(except Aliens and Terminator 2 ).
Commodus was now screwed. He couldn’t order Maximus’s execution;they crowd loved him too much. A grief stricken man seeking vengeance for the murder of his wife and son. There would be many members of the audience who would sympathize with his motive to makes the murderers pay for what they did to his wife and son.
He left the gladiator quarters as merely The Spaniard, and returned to rapturous cheers of “Maximus! Maximus!” This was the respect the General had from the people of Rome. He could have had every legion at his command and the people behind him, yet that was not his ambition. He was Cinncinatus, and George Washington, and every great commander of history, who saw beyond the moment.
One of the more epic lines in filmdom, along with The quivering lips and expression of internal struggle he reminds me of Peter 0’Toole (Lawrence/El Aurens) of Arabia) when he says’ Never do that again’ quivering lips and piercing blue eyes. Joachim Phoenix fits the role just as Russell Crowe fits his. Perfectly! Cheers! 👍
Does anyone know where that Teeth edit is? Let me explain there was an edit of the scene where Maximus removes his helmet for the Emperor, but instead of Maximus its just a giant set of teeth that proceed to clack together, this continues the Emperor looks disturbed, what follows is a lot of close up shots of the teeth clacking and then cut to black. It was about 20-30 seconds long I’ve been looking for it for a while now and have had no luck. I’d appreciate any response….a helpful one ideally 🙂
