I met Herve briefly at my husband’s job at a lumber yard in North Hollywood in the mid 80s. He was there with his assistant getting materials for a home project. He was pleasant, but a bit distant, and obviously focused on the reason he was there. I was still excited to meet him in person. RIP Herve.🙏🕊

Good article, bro. I wasn’t much of a fan of Fantasy Island but did see a few episodes back in the day. The ones I did see sort of reminded me of a romantic version of Twilight Zone. Tourists come to this island with a wishful fantasy, Mr. Rourke fulfills this dream yet there is always a kind of moral lesson for the participant, who then takes the advice to heart inferring that they will leave the island and return home to enjoy their regular lives better than before. I was only about 12 when I saw the series. Rest in eternal peace to all who have passed who were in Fantasy island…..especially Herve. Over there pain is no more.

I really enjoyed Fantasy Island and went to the Arboretum in Arcadia which was the exterior of the house used on the show. I’ve been to Fermin’s Point a # of times but had no idea Herve’s ashes were spread there in the ocean. A # of people of committed suicide from those cliffs. I’m glad they put the sign up there about “Don’t Do It” and the Suicide Hotline. Rest in Peace Herve.

This kind of reminds me of Verne Troyer & what he had to go through as a little person. They both took their lives because of the ridicule & the discrimination & the punch line to very insensitive jokes. This world can be so mean & cruel sometimes, So tragic so preventable were both Herve’s & Vern’s deaths if this world wasn’t so insensitive & cruel. As a gay person, I worked construction painting with my father. Alot of his crew were homophobics and when the gay topic came up, I had to hear it. Mostly would go back to painting to avoid falsely agreements towards their hatred towards gays. I was 12 years old on up. I grew up ashamed of my sexualality in life, I was depressed most of the time. This is such a great article honouring the late Herve. Also I saw the movie you mentioned about with your friend Jordan. I believe he is quite popular now and was so bad ass in that movie. I absolutely love your articles. Though I know he died young, but didn’t know much more than that. Sadly, little people or those of short stature always have ton of physical and mental issues. Just like anyone else who take their life, it is a relief they are not longer struggling with issues of the mind. Yet, he lives on as a pop culture icon to many.
Throughout the whole article, he got me eye watering when he said that people use to pat his friend’s head. It’s degrading. Almost like patting a dog on their head. You do stuff like that to a little kid, maybe, not a grown adult who is just shorter than the average height of other people. They can’t help how they were born.
Humans must remind themselves that we are all built slightly different regarding what makes us uniquely us. People may think that Scott is overreacting but depending on how he is built, everytime he does one of these article’s he quite possibly feels some of what the deceased was feeling during their lifetime.✌️
Allo! TOUT LE MONDE. In 1981, I was new to USA, I did not know who was Hervé then . My 2 French friends invited me at Café Moustache on Melrose and a moment later Hervé joined in.. I was happy to speak my language with him as I was just learning English on my own, with my dictionary. He did not want us to pay the bill, nor put the tab for the waitress. He had a genuine heart. and he made us laugh about how to loose our French accent. Can’t believe this has been 30 years that he left us. Repose en Paix cher HERVE.
What a sad story I had a tear in my eye perusal. He was clearly in pain and couldn’t take it anymore I have to say I get it. The building that Villechaize was ringing the bell in the tower is at the LA Arboretum. It’s in Temple City area. There is a pond that was used in Fantasy island, also other TV shows and movies were filmed there. It was owned by Lucky Baldwin he was a big time dude back in the early 1900’s. It’s been LA Arboretum for many years now.

Thank you for your excellent handling of this situation. Nothing has changed. I’m 5’3 and constantly hear comments made, and have even been patted on the head like you mentioned. My wife of 16 years also left me for a tall guy, who was soon after caught in her bed with another woman. Karma is a beach! She got hers, but try getting a date when you are 5’3. Most women are that shallow. I can’t even imagine what this poor man went through at 4′ tall. I sincerely hope he is now at peace.
I don’t judge people I don’t hate people all the same but different skin I don’t mind to get an answer out of somebody or help somebody out with directions but I don’t judge judges nobody’s to me because everybody helps each other out or pray for people or loved ones passed away I have a lot of family that is in heaven perusal me and everybody else in my family so I don’t judge people at all cuz we’re all the same person but different opinions you have a great night or a great day bye see you on the next one

Thank you Scott, I’m shorter than average but I’m not a little person I can only imagine what little people go through. I’ve been through enough teasing for being short. Even to this day I’ve been called “big guy” which is obviously mocking my height. I hate being called big guy it’s demeaning. No one really chooses their height.

Could you PLEASE! whenever your in California or whenever you have time because I know your busy please do a article on the TRUE CRIME case of Kirsten Costas who was killed by a jealous classmate Bernadette Protti in Orinda,California and the different locations of the case and of the their homes and school, I’m so fascinated by this case. They made a TV movie about this case called DEATH OF A CHEERLEADER or the alternative named called A FRIEND TO DIE FOR. Thank you Scott! I love your articles keep up the great work!!
I always liked him as Tattoo and off course in James Bond. I remember my brother told me about his tragic end. Its sad that they removed him from Fantasy Island in the end. I did hear the producers actually fighting against it for many seasons and even told there wouldn’t be a Fantasy Island without him.
I have always found it odd how all of us, no matter who you are, expect to be respected. Common courtesy if you will. But how so few us do this. We all want to be respected for the individuals that we are, but judge and treat poorly those who are different. As a species, we are nothing but hypocrites. Take care brother.

This one, I just had to let you know was, well, here goes, everytime you mispronounced Herve Villechaize’s (French name not Spanish) last name it was to me, like teeth being dragged against cement pavement. I don’t think doctors understand it when you say your in pain, I mean real pain. I have had seven back operations some were very severe, Takaysus disease, I have to go doc because I also have a thing where my throat tightens up about every 2 years but it’s no problem because I can have an doc, who is helpful and operates on it, I have had a major stroke, I can’t remember the name of but it it the disease called POTS that you can’t stand up without passing out or getting dizzy but there is a pill that helps me. I could go on and on but it’s a lifetime of pain. I have several doctors that tells me each time I look good. I wear make up and dress up, mothers told me I must do that. Having all these docs, and I don’t think they know about all my operation and the on going diseases. How can you describe pain. My heart went out for Havre because it doesn’t feel like there is never going to be a release. Like the man that went to his hospital because his back surgery still hurt. We the patients have to make a way that yes we look good but we need more help for our pain. The state put in a law that no more 4 a day of my pain meds, they say only 3 a day is enough. I have been through physical therapy, pain injection that should help, every possible things that should help. It doesn’t. Do these doctors think we are all going to get high and enjoy life. I don’t think so. Poor Herve didn’t have to do it or did he? Sorry to go on for so long but there is no help for people who live with this pain for so long and there isn’t cure in out future.
The Hollywood human shredding machine saw every actor as disposable, and it still does to this day. So very many of the part players in Hollywood movies and the TV stars of the 50s, 60s, 70s and 80s could have benefitted from some financial guidance sponsored by the major studios of the day. They all deserved better, yet Hollywood and California left them to rot. One more sad-story of temporary-celebrity systemic abuse. Herve’ literally became part of the definition for the TV generation of the late 70s.
The film starring Peter Dinklage shed a lot of light on Herve’s troubled life. He was in constant pain. It was very sad. Fantasy Island was a fun escape. I enjoyed it. People range from ignorant to deliberately mean. They’ll “joke” at the expense of or flat out bully anyone who is different, be they unusually small, unusually tall, markedly thin, fat, have a physical anomaly, or anything, really. I’m a big woman and people think they’re within their rights to come up to me and tell me I could lose weight if I just went on thus-and-such diet. When I first moved into the place where I live now, one of my new neighbors said to me, “My wife was obese like you, but at least you try. She didn’t try, so she died.” This guy wasn’t trying to be mean, but he’s a bit clueless on his best day. I said, “I have a choice. I can either accept myself as I am or I can go through life hating myself. I’m too old to waste time trying to hate myself thin anymore.” He backpedaled a bit at that, saying, “Oh, you are what you are. I didn’t mean anything by it.” I’m also disabled, and if I walk more than about 1/4 mile, my back starts to hurt, so I use an upright walker. I can’t tell you how many times people have asked me if I’m all right (if I wasn’t all right, I wouldn’t be out walking) or literally raised their voices as if I’m hearing impaired because I have a messed-up back. It’s truly amazing. Why people can’t just say “how are you doing” is beyond me.
One of the most tragic deaths,I remember Roger Moore paid tribute to him when he played Nic nac in the man with the Golden Gun. I don’t focus on his role as Tattoo because later on I thought it was cruel they made fun of him and people would say do it do the plane the plane and everyone would then laugh and he took that personally and I don’t blame him from shutting himself off from the world. We humans live by the second, many times we just forget that we’re not going to stay here for ever and we go on worrying about things that don’t matter ( like shoes not the right color – just to give an example) but we should enjoy every moment every tree every river every animals every human we come in contact with -God say it in his word don’t let the devil take your Joy.
Herve was a legend, bullying sucks dude I will say, I suffer from a disability and not to minimise it, but when you’re born with something, it’s all you’ve known and your skin can grow thick by 5 Yrs old. It doesn’t make people TRYING to hurt your feelings any more right, ‘sticks and stones’ was real to me though my wife thinks I have no emotions because of my poker face.

I don’t think it’s weird what you do I think it’s pretty incredible what you do I think it’s pretty sweet what you do you know people don’t always see death like how everybody else does you know it’s so final it’s The end you know and you just sit back and you think to yourself how lonely it is and how forever when you lose somebody it’s forever and you almost try to put yourself in that person’s place who’s passing away it’s just strange but it’s life so don’t ever think for one minute that what you do is weird because it’s not.
Ok Scott? I appreciate you saying the things you’ve brought to the attention to your viewers. You seem to be sincerely torn up about it. I’m not a little person; I’m what they call tiny standing four-six, several inches over a little person. But I get treated the same way including, yes, the pat on the head. It’s almost like a clearly stupid side comes out of people, asking questions they should not. But Scott… it’s the world we live in.
We never know what a person is going through, he must of been fighting with so much hurt both emotional but physical, that he thought the only way out was to commit suicide, nodody to talk to, he must of lived a shallow life, like not going out and having friend’s to hang out with.. i hope his pain is gone now and he’s pain-free and he can now see what a beautiful person he was..
