They stayed there not knowing if there was a third bomb anywhere or if there was another threat other than a bomb. They put their life on the line to save others. Parkland shooting: police rushed into the school and assisted hundreds of students in escaping the school and get them out of harm’s way. In addition, they found Nicholas Cruz shortly after he escaped the school and promptly detained him. If it weren’t for the police, Nicholas Cruz would still be out there today. So to say the police don’t protect and serve is the biggest heap of bullshit I’ve ever heard. No social worker or mental health professional is equipped to assist in tragedies listed above. I was in law enforcement for 15 years in 2 different departments. I was the type of law enforcement officer who would talk a store owner out of prosecuting a homeless person for stealing food – if I paid for it out of my pocket. I would provide information on shelter, clothing and employment rehabilitation. Yup….I guess I was a real bastard for doing that. I say that I was, because I took an early retirement to go back into logistics – since I’m such a bastard. So, you’ll get someone else now (who may not be as kind as me) when you dial 911. You see, I am not the only one in my department of about 2000 officers who did what I did. I possess a television, and I see PRECISELY what the public wanted and I provided it. I will never be involved with law enforcement again because of the generalized vilification of my name for trying to help people. I was followed home, and had to take different routes. I was called a ‘pig’ by members of my community and I left because of potential harm to my family. Police unions are there to provide officers legal aid as well as all types of other services that any UNION would provide its contributing members. They are attorneys that do their jobs. 3. 21 days. 21 days before you posted this article, on June 4th 2020, a local police officer was on call for a wellness check. He didn’t have a partner with him, which is against protocol, and the Edmundston Police Department don’t have body cams. The call was made from a man in Ontario who was worried about his 26 y/o indigenous girlfriend who had just moved in New-Brunswick. She was receiving suspicious messages on her phone and believed she was being stalked. That woman was Chantel Moore, from British Colombia, and she was my new neighbour. At 11 pm the night before, I met her for the first time. At 2:30 am, I was woken up by 5 gunshots. The officer, Jeremy Sun, did NOT announce himself before loudly banging on her door and windows. She panicked and grabbed a knife, probably thinking it was her stalker. When he got in, nobody knows what actually happened but he said it only took seconds before she lunged at him. And that would be impossible. Because her grandma wrote about seeing her body at the morgue. The bastard broke her leg. Her face was so beat up and purple, she was covered in bruises. She wasn’t when I saw her 3 hours and a half prior to her murder. That man kept his job, and the Quebec private investigator’s investigation led nowhere. Do you realize the main purpose of cops existing is to protect the city and innocent civilians from any threat??? You realize not all people can go up to their boss and just say ‘I quit’, and when you say are you okay with your family member going to Christmas parties with people like this, you can’t help that you are in the proximity of them. If you were in the same area as someone you don’t like, would you just leave? This is like referring to people at school. If you don’t like someone you don’t just quit because of it. If your a good cop, you aren’t going to be friends with someone like this, but your going to keep it civil. You might disagree with it, but if you arent civil, it could cost your job. If police get defunded and an unarmed social worker gets sent to a call where an emotionally disturbed person (EDP) (unknown weapons) is causing a disturbance at a public or private location, what should the tax payer funded social worker to do when the EDP produces a weapon and uses said weapon on bystanders??
Honestly really informative article. You make a great argument and can support on this. The police are humans at the end of the day so of course some are going to abuse that power for selfish reasons. The sense of morality coming from justice is warped at the moment and there needs to be a serious discussion about where we want to go as society. Whether it’s a peaceful solution or a case restart and kill us all ya know?
There is a small line between “bastard” and “bastardized”, as you stated is meant for bastards. Bastard is an insult, bastardized not quite nessecarily. There is also a “small” line between “all” and “some/few”. One is generalisation at it’s finest, the other one is just pointing out that there are police officers who are doing their job with racist, corrupt etc. backgrounds. You can guess which is which, right? If you and your group don’t want to be generalised by a few people rioting and protesting with violence and so on, the police does also not want to be generalised by such officers. Basic logic. Acab is an unacceptable statement and in addition it’s disrespectful to all the genuine and good police officers, who are the majority.

There a less corrupt cops today then ever. Some people including myself wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t for cops so idk. There really useful. Infact Being a cop is one of my dream jobs. Wait so, I did the research and the officers in my family members place if employment actually don’t defend people, they replaced racist hiring departments in 2016 because the majority of POC police officers were offended. I live in a major city. That said, his sector is very specific. He’s not bumping shoulders with regular cops. I don’t have to research to recognize corruption in other parts of the police force here. I have personal stories from other family and old news cases. What frustrates me is, this argument doesn’t leave a lot of room for nuance.
Why is a complete reimagining of the system the only option? If there are clear and self evident problems with how law enforcement operate, why not propose changes to those problems? Push legislation to bust open the problematic police unions, propose additional regulations for those who fail to do there job within the system (such as those who refuse to make bad cops accountable for their actions), etc.
I don’t know much about the rape whilst on duty, but Eric Gardener wasn’t killed by a cop strangling him. The cop who originally had him around the neck was definitely excessive in his use of force but he let go well before Eric died. It appeared that Eric died from possibly the pressure of the other cops on top of him. For someone telling others to do research you don’t know much yourself. In fact all you have to do is watch the Eric Gardener article to know that. That’s it. Takes like 5 seconds.
I’m confused, how can you just say for them to quit? They’re middle class workers, probably with families, and they probably need the money. I feel like it’s not that simple. Especially considering young adults with college debt that desperately need that job. I understand what you’re saying, I just think you’re heavily generalizing. Maybe the solution could be in another union that could support police officers while they go on strike, but I just don’t think them having to quit their jobs is a viable solution
i just got my vaccine today and there were a few cops there for guidance and to help people and stuff and they asked us a few friendly questions, convesation starters you know? and they were really friendly and funny. people like them are quiting their jobs left and right for all the hate and un needed drama that law enforcement has been recieving for a few really bad incidents. but its unreal why people are hating on innocent officers. some that have never even tazed a man before and are being called murderers. its unfair and this lady who probably dropped out of first grade and has lived with a karen and a ken for her whole life is jumping onto youtube for MAYBE one or two people to agree. get a life and maybe try talking to an officer once in a while. they will appreciate it more than you know to not be seen as a monster but as a human being.
You make some very valid points and I believe you to be mostly correct. But when you spoke about who are you gonna call to help/protect you in a bad situation you skirted the issue with domestic violence and homeless people examples. My problem is who are you gonna call when your family member or loved one is assaulted or murdered? Whos going to investigate, do forensics etc.? Solving a murder isn’t cheap and Im sure none of us would want to get that bill in the mail. Other than that you are incredibly smart and on point.
There was a British soldier in World War 1 who had the opportunity to kill Adolf Hitler on the battlefield but instead took pity on the injured German soldier and helped him receive medical aid and saved his life. Would you say this man is horrible? He had good intentions and decided to save someone’s life, though he was fighting against that person in a brutal and violent war that had taken a number of his close friends. Your generalization of all cops being bastards is like saying this man was horrible because he aided Nazism. Just because he decided he wanted to bring some sort of good to his destroyed world by helping someone who was obviously hurt you would call someone like that a bastard? There are a surprising amount of cops who joined the force because they experienced traumas like domestic abuse and aim to help others so they won’t go through the same thing. Each person has their own reason for being in the force, some for good and some for bad, and generalizing them because some bastards did some shitty things hurts the people who have only done good and have always had good intentions just because they were associated by profession. And if you really want to be stubborn about it and say that cops are all still shitty people no matter intention because of their actions, do you think all murderers wanted to do the things they did? What about the murderers who did so to protect a loved one? What about the murderers who panicked trying to protect themselves? Would you say these people are still horrible even though they never wanted to have to make that decision?

Also, many do still serve their purpose which is to do what is right without taking advantage of the injustice enabled by the ruling system. (The ruling system is whoever is responsible for persecuting cops, whether that be the head of the department or courts). On top of that, not all of those keep their mouths shut on injustice, however, many that do are faced with having to be a good cop but not speak out against the unions (which can result in the good cop’s firing) or get fired/quit and have there be one less good cop for the community. That is some gray area, however, cops that do the right thing (not being corrupt and not staying silent if the dilemma described earlier isn’t present) are not corrupt, thus not bastardized, as they are indeed serving their purpose (which has changed over history) to confront and detain criminals and essentially protect the community. This feels very wordy so I hope this isn’t confusing XD my b
Enlighten me if I am wrong. Why would a whole system be blamed for a couple or a single individual who did something that passes the line? And why generalize it? It’s true that there are police taking advantage of the fact that they can “escape” it. It’s true that there are officers abusing their “power”. Instead of blaming the entire system, why wouldn’t the people just team up and put the culprit down and give them a punishment that they are worthy to suffer for? I could only imagine if loads of people uniting and bringing down these individuals things would have been better. It’s just a thought of mine.
Instead of saying ACAB(all cops are bastar*ds) we should start saying ACAS(all cops are sus). Think about it, it’s less offensive and it only shows that we think that a cop might be sus(suspicious) of something but not necesseraly guilty of it. It’s the same thing in the popular game amogus with thinking that all red players are impostors really. This might sound stupid but hear me out. Statistically, every player regardless of their color has the same chance of being the impostor, yet, there is this social stigma that only red players are impostors. However, players of Amugus have developed this great system that will help them show their suspicion on someone without saying that they are the impostor(in case that they actually aren’t). They say that someone is ‘sus’ so nobody gets their feelings hurt. We can apply this knowledge to the real world, right? If everyone can be an impostor in amongsus, regardless of their color, so can anyone be a bastard in real world, regardless of their task(job as some low inteligence individuals might call it).
All the people who talk about how defunding the police aren’t thinking. Anyone remember the trope of a person joining the force to stop crime, but they’re disappointed when there isn’t anything to stop? And then out of nowhere some big shit happens and they get to do stuff. Only one half of that whole trope is realistic. That isn’t even including the cops who literally avoid danger on purpose. The amount of cops in shootouts is extremely slim. If you honestly believe that cops need to be strapped head to toe like a fuckin 40k space marine just to patrol you’re in need of a reality check

If I were to say that all whites are evil or all asians are evil or all blacks are evil I am sure that you would be mad as you should because you would say that you are not evil. The racist cops should be prosecuted, the cops who rape people should be prosecuted but the majority of police officers are good people who got into the force because they wanted to help their community. I’m sorry, I’m sure you’re a very nice person but the generalization that is used here is just wrong.
They need to be replaced and de militarized, their powers need to be restated and have consequence for violating someone’s rights and doing illegal arrests etc. They need 3rd party organizations made up of the people who regularly check policing conduct, community relations etc. When you see a cop your instinct shouldn’t be to freeze or drive better, or don’t look suspicious. They should make you feel safe. They shouldn’t be so intrusive etcetcetc
the problem with racism in police is that its so mainstream people tell black people to fear cops, that its better to run away/bunker instead of cooperating. sure, some cops may be shit. but thats not nearly the majority and in most cases theese cops will be brought to justice. i dont want to hate on someones oppinion, but when that oppinion inderectly kills people ill make an exception. if you demonize cops further, more idiots will belive you and act up in unreasonable situations. they might feel like delivering “justice” via killing cops. wich only has bad outcomes. or when someone is halted by police they are so afraid that they pull a gun.
As a person from the UK, I do not believe ACAB applies to my country however that does not mean I’m saying that the criminal justice system is perfect in fact it is EXTREMELY broken. However I think it’s a real slippery slope to be using a slogan that was first used in the 1970s when things were very different and labelling police officers like that even if that’s not the real meaning, I think you just need to get a new slogan. I believe the system needs large reform which starts with the people at the very top of government not the police officers at the very bottom of the system so it’s a real slap in the face to all those cops who aren’t racist and put their lives on the line every day and only wear that uniform to make a difference because in the current state of the world those cops can make more of a difference in the police force that not.
I think scale here is important though. Yes it is a tragedy that some people are murdered by cops, but with any large system poorly handled situations are inevitable. We live in a stochastic world. However, if we look at the scale of the issue of “police killings,” so far we are 8 months into the year 2021, and there have been a total of 156 police shootings leading to deaths IN TOTAL. That is including lawful shootings, self-defense, and of course shootings across all races. It would be great if we could go and tackle every problem that exists, but unfortunately we as a species have limited resources to devote to problems. In my humble opinion, in light of the data, I believe this is not nearly the largest of the problems that afflict the African American community. In 2016, 2570 black-on-black killings were recorded, and in 2019 1.1 million drug abuse violations in the African American community were recorded. I believe that the anti-education rhetoric and aspects of the culture in these communities glorifying aggression are large problems that FAR outweigh murders by police. Of note, I’m not making these statements to place the blame on anyone, and I’m not an expert on this subject. I’m merely stating what I believe would serve the African American community’s best interest
Man, I challenge you to look at the actual facts surrounding police “brutality”, both quantitatively and qualitatively, with your feelings put to the side. First, the actual statistics do not back up the acab POV or the other more extreme ones, as a truly unjustified death at the hand of police, is incredibly rare, almost nonexistent on a yearly basis. Second, if you go through case by case, the legitimate facts of each situation that actually make it into the news, (almost) never align with the false media narrative they like to put their spin on and get it out first. You have to ask yourself, why does the media continue hyping and embellishing race related hate crime hoaxes (that always end up being completely fabricated), and totally manipulating the reporting when it comes to “police brutality” situations. The studies show that reported hate crimes against black people are nearly always total hoaxes or completely manipulated. Lastly, the media and democrat politicians love it when alleged racism happens or a black person is killed by police. DNC politicians love it so they can push emotional messaging in order to push their gun control and anti police stances. MSM outlets love it because they can package the story in a way to boost ratings short term, and, get all of the very simple minded and easily fooled acab-types, emotionally invested and believing that cops are hunting black people. I mean, perusal the same types of people get convinced over and over and over, until completely manipulated is sad, but every country has their need for useful idiots so the ones running the show can acquire more power.
