Gourley is too in his head about the permanence. If he did get a sweet Phantom Menace tattoo 25 years ago, today it would just be a reminder of that time in his life and how much it meant to him then. Our past is always with us, even when our perspective changes. A tattoo can be one kind of outward expression of this.
I’ve been perusal Conan for years since college, worked as a graphic designer for 8 years and since switched/dedicated my career to tattooing. Now listening to them talk about tattoos makes me giddy, how awesome would it be to be able to tattoo people like them. Surely a lot of fun ideas involved in the process 😂😂😂
That’s kinda neat and sweet. Sailors going to other cultures and seeing their culturally significant tattoos, coming back to they’re own cultures and maybe feeling like outcast or different, so they’re own and give it they’re own meaning. It’s fascinating how things travel and shift from place to place. Culture to culture 🙌🏿
Actually some history for your program—tattoos were once very popular and widespread in ancient China, and even one emperor from 1000 years ago had them. However, the Chinese authorities up until a couple of hundred years ago also tattooed some of prisoners on the face to mark them for life as punishment.
I get what matt is saying. I can identify with him the most. He is saying he can be compulsive when it comes to things he likes which doesnt reflect in the future how he feels. In short he is afraid of the “fear of regret”. And I get it. Ive never got any tattooes but if I did it would probably be my parents names. Cause that is probably the only thing I think I could never regret taking to the grave with me.
Often when people are dying or post operative they get medication that mimics heroin. Dilaudid is addictive but very effective at relieving pain and stress. That’s why it has to be treated with respect otherwise it’s easy to get addicted. As for tattoos a woman where I worked had a very well drawn old timey typewriter on her calf. I always wanted to ask what it signified but I was too shy to ask. I figured she might be a writer. It was intriguing and original. I’m not thrilled about the idea of tattoos unless I did something very noteworthy; landing on the moon, killing Hitler etc.
Tattoos have completely lost their original meaning, right now it doesn’t matter if you do it for followin’ the crowd or because you have a real ideological reason, you’ll be part of the herd. Ron Young, the singer of the Hard Rock band Little Caesar, was chastized in the ’80s because he had a full tattoed torso. Now in the last years he said this joke: “I think that for this Halloween I’ll cover all my tattoos so I can dress up as a rebel”. If you think about soccer moms with their SUV and tattoos, you can see how society tamed everything that had another meaning before the ’90s. At the end it’s your body, do everything you wanna do but I go along with the sayin’ “never put a bumper sticker on a Lamborghini” or “never add glitters to the Mona Lisa”.
I have always wanted one and know what it is and where! I had some Mexican coworkers that are still friends of mine till this day, their nephew was a tattoo artist and agreed to come to my farm one weekend and do it. It was going to be kind of a party weekend. They flaked on me, I think because I am an old white guy, and they did not want to deform me somehow? That was going to be for my 50th Birthday. I am still going to get it though! Funny thing is people think they will regret it. I regret not having the one I want in my 20’s!
All of my friends are in their 70s, as am I. And we’re all artists, but none of us have any tattoos. I think it is not something our generation was into. I’m around younger people all the time, as I live in a college town. There aren’t too many tats I think look any good. My barber, who is younger man, ( maybe he is 40) & he has them on both arms, from his shoulders down to his wrists. He’s the type of person who wears sleeveless shirts a lot of the time. Over time, his have lost their clarity. To me, his arms just look like they have dirt on them.
I don’t have tattoos, but the people who complain about other peoples’ tattoos (or hairstyles, piercings, etc.) are so cringe. It’s never a person with any self-awareness. It’s always some middle-aged guy flexing his $6-haircut-realtree-shirt-baggy-jorts-and-crocs drip at Olive Garden who whines about the 20 year-old server having tattoos or pink hair. “Tattoos are ugly,” he says. 😤Okay. Keep rocking the XXL 2014 World Series graphic tee though, fashionista, because everybody likes what you have on. 🙄
I’ve let friends, and my sister tattoo me. Some of the tattoos are not at all perfect, but I love them just because it was a meaningful person who tattooed me. Also, famously, one of Napoleon’s generals had ‘Death To Kings’ tattooed across his chest, he later became the king of Sweden and was a bit embarrassed about his tattoo.
I was a freshman in college in 1995. One of my roommates wanted a tattoo. I shelled out $200 for him to get a huge black-ink tattoo covering his whole calf muscle with the picture of Jim Carrey as Ace Ventura. Wonder where that poor bastard is now. Likely winning bets? Hey, Joe, if you see this, miss ya, man! ❤😂
The funny thing about Conan is he could mention racism and white supremacy but that may destroy his career but he would be doing the right thing. I get it. Too much sacrifice to stand up for justice. Be the only white boy to do the right thing. Be the only white boy. I believe in you. Everyone believes in you. Deadpan your act to the point of replacing justice for the current system of white supremacy. Carlin was heartbroken for decades that he couldn’t shift white supremacy. Yet here you are, ignoring it.
I remember perusal the commentary for “Conan O’Brien Can’t Stop” and him talking about the fan who’s shoulder he signed, and how later he ran into her again and she’d gotten it tattooed on her. He mentioned that it made him really uncomfortable, which is why I think he’s acting a bit more introverted here than normal. No disrespect to that fan at all (I love tattoos myself and even have a Conan one planned) but I think it’s his own writing being permanently tattooed on someone that just makes him feel a little overwhelmed.
Man Conan O’Brien really is one of the few celebrities that I actually want to meet. I would love to meet any celebrity especially a huge one but when it comes to celebrities that I think will actually give me the time of day as a fan I think Conan O’Brien is one of the few people I really want to meet. It’s easy to imagine so many other celebrities being too busy or being jerks when they’re not on camera but I honestly think if I bumped into a Conan O’Brien at a grocery store and told him I’ve been perusal him since 1993 he would be happy to see me, unless he was busy or going through something terrible himself at the time, but I think even then it would be gracious the way he would turn down the meeting in the grocery store LOL.
Conan definitely needs to know his cultural impact extends beyond what his ego allows. I had a 10th grade AP European History teacher with a picture of Boris Yeltsin signed by Conan hanging in his classroom. I would stare at it, and finally mustered the courage to ask Mr. S why the hell someone named Conan O’Brien signed a picture of Boris Yeltsin. Turns out, Mr. S had gone to a taping around 99 and Conan was giving out random things afterwards. The gift was that picture, signed. I went home and watched my first episode of Late Night and was immediately a fan.
y’all are being so weird. it’s a really cool tattoo concept and conan just got speechless because he didn’t know what to do with this convo, it’s really hard to find the right words to say to someone who just showed you a tattoo inspired by you. especially seeing as conan is self conscious about his looks AND doesn’t seem to be into having ink on one’s skin, so you can see him go through all possible encouraging things to say and coming up short and going for the jokes haha
Well, leave it to The Northern Titmouse Fan (it’s a bird people), but all I have on offer is a question that would presumably titillate comedy minds. “Is anyone cracking jokes about the Nury Martinez scandal? The issue was addressed by POTUS even. One wonders if jokes about that unfortunate behavior, on the part of quite a few men too, is a 3rd rail of comedy in our current Southland political climate? Hmmm…? Well, this knucklehead wonders sometimes. Adios muchachos y muchachas! (Hasta la day after tomorrow is more likely)
