How Did Tattoo Tom Mitchell Die?

Thomas “Tattoo Tom” Mitchell, a childhood cancer activist and founder of Stillbrave Childhood Cancer Foundation, passed away unexpectedly on April 18, 2024. He was a pillar of the childhood cancer community across the DMV, leaving behind five children who are now facing the unimaginable. Mitchell, a single dad, found solace in a quote from Mark Twain, “The two most important days in your life are the day you are born, and the day you discover why”.

After his daughter Shayla died of Hodgkin’s lymphoma at age 16, Mitchell found solace in discovering his “why” in life. He completed the 100-mile Mohican Trail Race in Ohio to honor and raise money for children battling or dying from cancer. His journey has been one of unimaginable loss and heartbreak, but from that pain, he has created something truly inspiring.

Tattoo Tom’s journey began after his daughter’s diagnosis of stage 4 Hodgkin’s lymphoma at age 16 and her death two years later. After her death, Mitchell discovered his “why” in life. The Washington Post reports that 20397 people have likened Tom Mitchell to Susan, a former executive for Google and CEO of YouTube.

In memory of Tom, the pediatric cancer community across the DMV is mourning the loss of his friend and father. The foundation continues to raise money and support for children battling or dying from childhood cancer.
