Do Tattoos Stay After Injury?

3.5 rating based on 149 ratings

Tattoo aftercare is crucial for the long-term appearance and health of your skin. It involves keeping your tattoo clean, moisturized, and protected from the sun to prevent infections, scars, and ink reactions. The four stages of tattoo healing include oozing, redness, peeling, and aftercare.

It is essential to follow the steps and timeline for proper tattoo aftercare to prevent fading, irritation, and infection. The first stage of tattoo healing occurs 1-2 days after receiving the tattoo, with blood, ink, and plasma oozed. Stage 2 occurs 1-2 weeks after, marked by irritated or flaking skin. Stage 3 occurs 2-4 weeks after, with a scaly, reddish, and peeling appearance.

Improper aftercare can lead to infections, scarring, and other negative outcomes. If you get a deep wound over a tattoo, it is likely that the tattoo will still be there when it’s healed. Most tattoos take about two weeks to fully heal and fully “immerse” themselves into one’s skin. To prevent infection and encourage healing, keep tattooed skin clean and wash the area twice a day.

After getting a new tattoo, the outer layer of skin typically appears healed within 2 to 3 weeks, but the healing process can take up to 6 months. The ink remains, and sometimes a tattoo may look healed on the surface but the layers under the skin are still being repaired. Tattoos can be removed in two to four visits, but it may take up to 10 sessions before the tattoo is completely gone.
