Even if Ruby wasn’t a good student and was into drugs, it wouldn’t have justified the mother’s treatment of her. Everyone is inherently deserving of respect, and I feel that having the mom only realize that she was wrong because Ruby was the complete opposite of her expectations takes away from the message the article is trying to get across.

My best friend is a Goth and I adore her so damn much. She is one of my favorite people. So it really upsets me when people misjudge people who like the gothic style. Some of the most amazing women in my life have gone through so many different types of bullying and mental abuse but are the most understanding and compassionate people that I have ever met. I wouldn’t dare change my life if it meant I wouldn’t have gotten to meet them and their amazing friends who are supportive of people for being as kind hearted at them. The most understanding are usually the most hurt from their own personal experience.
My parents are divorced for almost ten years now and after the divorce, I was always living with my mum and grandma. Back when I was a goth girl people always made fun of me, called me names and since I was very thin they thought that I had an eating disorder or I was on drugs. But I wasn’t, I ate well, I never did drugs. My friends knew who I really was and knew I was one of the nicest people who never breaks the rules and would never do a drug. Gothic folk are beautiful (both outwardly and inwardly), artistic, poetic, musical, kind, loving, faithful, friendly, sincere, empathetic, caring, protective, loyal, patient, spiritually gifted and mature, humble, non-judgemental, accepting, helpful, polite, creative, intelligent, confident, humorous, respectful and so much more. If humanity can learn to do and to be all of these constructive things, this world would become a utopia.
This is really great to see! Awareness of judging is necessary. I’m a Metalcore Goth, and everywhere I go pleople wisper and give nasty looks. People put stereotypes on Goths/Emo/Scene/etc. about being “depressed” all the time and shy or rude… But let me say, most of us aren’t. It’s a fashion statement. Goth isn’t just about wearing black all the time, it has a deep meaning for that person! No matter who they are or what they look like, you don’t know what that person is going through. So please, don’t judge a book by it’s cover. 🖤
I was the goth chick in high school and throughout my twenties. I’m now 37 and while I’ve toned my style down a bit, goth culture is still very much in my soul. I still jam to Bauhaus, Sisters of Mercy, Joy Division, Siouxsie and the Banshees, Skinny Puppy, Nine Inch Nails, etc. It’s not always “just a phase”! 😉🖤🦇
My Step-dad has never treated us that way. I dress dark and wear a lot of Anime stuff and he doesn’t say anything because he knows that it makes us happy and we feel like we can be ourselves! If our Mom ever saw him treat us the way her stepmother was treating her. She’d kick him out of the house immediately! My stepsister has a disability where she can’t walk right and my little step brother may have a disorder. But I treat them just like my own siblings! And I love them equally.
After I have watched the trailer however, the goth girl has no reason to be treated like this especially due to her appearance of being goth and looking quite different and not as normal as others at school, but you need to give her a chance to prove that she has a good heart. I remember back in the late 90’s, a lady who was into the Gothic look was deemed as “Satanic” and “into witchcraft ” at my job. Mind you, she kept to herself, did her work and troubled no one. I had a few conversations with her and she was actually a very nice person. People are unbelievable sometimes. 😒
I am goth and it really hurts to see us be sterotyped like this were literally just people but have a different way of expressing ourselves. I really enjoy the creativity and the culture 🙂 Oh I didnt even notice how much attention this got I thought it would have just been a silly comment but let me clear up a few things here 🙂 : Not all goths are the same, there all multiple different types of goths out there including: Traditional/Trad goths. Mall goths, Cyber goths, Hippie goths and etc. Not all goth has to have mental disorders and bad life experiences. Its simply a fashion choice. Not all goths listen to heavy metal/rock. There is different types of goth music. But goth culture isnt all about the clothes and whatever else its also about the music. There is a lot of gatekeepers in the goth community and other alt subcultures. In all reality were just people and we dress differently. Its not to get attention out of people or tp make people mad or whatever, Its for us and we find it fun to do.
I don’t understand why people think it’s so “emo” or “pick me” of people when they dress like and put makeup on like Ruby. There’s really nothing wrong with it, it’s just a form of self-expression. It’s really creative and fun if you think about it, people need to stop with the stereotypes, it’s really getting out of hand.
This is the first time I’m triggered by a Dharr Mann épisode. Most of the time, I find the bad scenarios comical. But here… Seeing how the stepmom character doesn’t learn ANYTHING and has no consequences for her horrible behavior, and how stupid and weak the dad character is… I lived it, being hated by a stepmom and feeling pushed aside. The way you treat that kind of situations (and the opiod epidemic) is a shame.
To be honest as a gothic witch myself; I thought my parents were going to treat me like how that mother treated the fathers daughter. I felt like I had to wait until I was older to reveal that side of me. I was afraid of getting shunned and out casted in both my home and the schools I went to. Though I am glad I embraced that aspect of me first before revealing too early.
This article inspires many people’s lives and the generations that is yet to come based on the society around us! Thanks for a inspirational article, of not judging someone based of their appearances before we get to experience a time with them. This will put a huge word and symbolize the strong and bold people out there, that don’t feel comfortable.
As an emo girl i really appreciate Dhar that you’ve made this article! When i’m at school i kinda get judged based on how i dress (I’m a straight A-B student) what they don’t know is that i’m going through some hard time, so that is why i dress up all black, it gives me a little confidence since my confidence is zero. So i just ignore those people, what matters is how do you feel in your style, not what other people think! Remember that most of alt people are kind and don’t judge book by its cover! <3

I dress how I like for me not for others and the “druggies” part is so stereotypical It’s so true I get that a lot. I don’t do drugs never have and never will. They are very very bad for u. I actually loved this one this tells to never judge anyone by there appearance, and you never know what they go through. And being goth dosent mean your a bad person, goth people are actually really nice! Just because you wear black or have nose piercings or anything else, that dosent make you mean. Your a great person in life think about all the good things you’ve done!!
In my high school, most of the kids are either goths or metal heads, cuz it’s an art shool 🙂 ; and no one’s ever been picked on here. You can just be yourself, and no one will shame you. However, the scenes from this vid (and Ruby’s situation) likely show what most of my friends and I were like during primary school.

the stereotype people have about goths is totally incorrect. all goth people i have met were super nice! my brothers ex girlfriend was one of the nicest people i have met. she made me feel so comfortable around her and she treated me as less of her boyfriends little sibling and more of a friend bro goths are so nice

I’m a 53-year-old goth and I was digging the scene used to run clubs with my various partners and this one really hit home…. I still to this day will wear my eyeliner at times or my face paint because I’m also a juggalo and the looks and the stairs that you’ll get from people I started to just enjoy it it was their problem not mine if you know what I mean They’ve also proven that a large portion of the gothic community are also very high intelligence very artistic and creative and if you took five seconds to have a discussion with us instead of automatically figuring because we’re in all black and wearing eyeliner and makeup then we must be Satan worshipers LOL you discover we’re just like you it’s just our style And I know you can be a goth and succeed…. Hey, I’m not sure if you read my comment but thank you for using my name even if you haven’t used my com seen my comment and just thought Ruby will be a nice name easy not too long ago. My dog passed away. She was a hug she was a gorgeous one since we also had a cat inside. We had to keep her outside because of this hot weather in Rocky. We couldn’t be able to see her much. Are you always used to talk out the window, my parents since the school day they wouldn’t, they didn’t want to tell me because I got a award so after they told me I cried and cried for about about two hours or half an hour go to sleep without her
I’m an emo person. I’d make sure my friends are safe from bullies and I have to make sure I don’t want to be bothered by bullies too. When I was a senior, I felt regret after me and my friend who is a choir president stopped being friends because she was cooler than me and I was a nerd. I felt bad, ashamed and mad at myself. My advice is to not make the same mistake that I did and help people around!
