The 24-year-old figure skater became the first American woman to hit a triple axel in the free skate program, making her the third woman ever to land the notorious jump on Olympic ice.

However, the tattoo on her left thigh is not a large piece of ink but rather a Team USA-branded kenisiology tape. The Washington Post reports that viewers could occasionally see a black mark that read USA, which could be either a tattoo or athletic tape. As Nagasu became a household name, many viewers were eager to find out what was on her leg. It is more likely that Nagasu is wearing KT Tape, which comes in a special USA-printed version.

The USA emblazoned on her leg was not just the historic triple axel that captured the attention of Olympics viewers. Nagasu herself revealed that the design was not a big bold tattoo but rather Kinesio Tape, which the brand confirmed on its own as Team USA-branded kinesiology tape used for a muscle strain. The design was later revealed to be a part of her training routine and was not a tattoo.
